Big news just rolled out from Walt Disney World! Magic Kingdom is getting its largest expansion ever, and at the heart of it is Piston Peak National Park, a stunning new land inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Cars universe and the rugged beauty of America’s national parks!
Let’s break down what this means for your next Disney vacation.
Welcome to Piston Peak National Park

Imagine a world of towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers, and dramatic geysers all wrapped in the playful, fast-paced Cars storytelling we know and love.
Though Piston Peak is fictional, it draws inspiration from real-world Rocky Mountain landscapes and the iconic architecture of America’s national parks. Disney’s Imagineers are using a style called “Parkitecture” (developed by the National Park Service) to make sure every trail, lodge, and ranger station feels like it naturally belongs in the wilderness.
This is more than just a pretty backdrop — guests will be able to:
✅ Explore the visitor lodge and Ranger HQ
✅ Wander through forested trails
✅ Watch off-road rally races in the “wheelderness”
And from the outside, the new land will *hopefully* blend seamlessly with the surrounding areas, tucking neatly between Frontierland and Liberty Square.
What’s Closing Soon?
To make way for this exciting expansion:
- Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will close starting July 7, 2025.
- Work will continue behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, where Disney is also building its first-ever Villains-inspired land with two major attractions, shopping, and dining.
Mark your calendars: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen next year with fresh new magic!
What Else Is Coming This Summer?
There’s even more magic headed to Magic Kingdom soon:
- Disney Starlight makes its grand debut on July 20, 2025 — promising dazzling entertainment in the streets.
- The Beak and Barrel, a brand-new pirate-themed experience, will welcome swashbucklers of all ages.
Disney is pulling out all the stops to transform Magic Kingdom into an even more immersive storytelling destination — and we can’t wait to see it unfold.
