Video: Child Climbs Into Animal Kingdom Lodge Savanna, Parents Retrieve Her

A video circulating on Reddit this week shows a young child going over a viewing wall and into one of the savanna habitats at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. The footage, shared by Reddit user MetaKate334, reportedly captures an incident from June 25 in which the child’s parents climbed the same rock wall a few minutes later to bring her back to the observation area.

As a parent who has stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge with small kids multiple times, it’s hard to imagine how this ever got to this point.

What the video shows

According to the original poster, the child had been sitting on the rock ledge that separates the guest viewing deck from the habitat. The video then shows adults climbing over to reach her, and she was back in the viewing area within a few minutes.

What the poster said

In the thread, MetaKate334 clarified two key points about what happened:

  1. She did jump. Numerous people confirmed she was sitting on the rock ledge with people yelling for her to get down and she chose to jump.
  2. There are animals in the enclosure. She was in the median area between the animals and the observation deck.

Why she didn’t appear to be in immediate danger

The savannas at Animal Kingdom Lodge are designed with separation built in. Guest viewing platforms sit behind low walls, and there’s a buffer zone between where guests stand and where the animals actually roam. Based on the poster’s account, the child came down into that median area rather than anywhere near the wildlife, and she didn’t appear to be in immediate danger from any animals at any point in the video.

That design is part of what makes the resort what it is. The lodge spans more than 40 acres of savanna and is home to dozens of species, with cast members stationed along the viewing areas throughout the day. The layout is meant to let guests get remarkably close while keeping a real separation between people and animals.
